Residential Use of Natural Gas
Approximately 130,000 households in Quebec use natural gas for a variety of purposes, mostly for home heating and cooking. Natural gas is one of the most efficient energy sources for heating, and often costs much less than electric heating. Gas is also a very low-cost fuel that can be used for generating electricity.
Industrial and Commercial Use of Natural Gas
Across Quebec there are more than 2,500 industrial consumers of natural gas, including the aluminum industry and the pulp and paper industry. There are also nearly 50,000 commercial and institutional consumers, such as hospitals and schools, who rely on natural gas primarily for heating in the winter due to its low cost and high reliability, even during a power outage.
